The woman killed while cycling has been identified as Fresno State Professor Dr. Adela Santana-Mullooly.
The Fresno Bee initially reported the death on Sunday, Oct. 2, after the cyclist was struck by a sports car in eastern Fresno County.
Dr. Elizabeth Lowham, Dean of the College of Social Sciences, confirmed the news with a statement to The Collegian on Monday, Oct. 3.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the sudden death of Dr. Adela Santana-Mullooly over the weekend. In addition to being a long-time, valued colleague in the Anthropology Department at Fresno State, [she] was an avid cyclist and a vibrant presence in the lives of many within the College of Social Sciences and across the university and community,” Lowham said.
Santana-Mullooly is survived by her step-daughter (21), step-son (18), son (12) and twin sons (10), as well as her husband, Dr. James Mullooly, and her sisters, Alda and Analola Santana.
The university is emphasizing the family’s request for privacy and space at this time while mourning her loss, according to Lowham.
“We are focused on supporting each other and supporting those whose lives were touched by Adela including our students and our colleagues as we grieve her untimely loss,” she said.
The Collegian will share a memorial piece about Santana-Mullooly in the coming weeks.
