Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener is reportedly looking to transfer from the university, entering his name in the NCAA transfer portal on Tuesday.
The news broke the day after head coach Kalen DeBoer announced his move to coach the University of Washington.
He played for Washington for the 2017-2018 season before transferring to Fresno State.
Haener saw no action in his first year at Washington, but played four games in his second year. After entering the transfer portal in 2019, he became a Fresno State Bulldog.
Due to NCAA transfer rules, he had to sit out his first year. But playing in 2020 as a junior, he started to find his role in Fresno State’s offense.
He led the Mountain West in average passing yards per game, ranking fourth in the NCAA and second in the Mountain West conference for pass efficiency.
This season Haener led the ‘Dogs to a 9-3 record. He finished with 3,810 total passing yards, becoming the seventh all time Bulldog to do this in one season. One of his most memorable performances as a Bulldog was leading the team down the field with 57 seconds left and defeating then-ranked No. 11 UCLA at the Rose Bowl.
Haener also threw 32 passing touchdowns. Ranking fourth all-time as a Bulldog, this was the most touchdowns a Fresno State quarterback has recorded since Derek Carr in 2013.
The season was cut short after San Diego State defeated Boise State to make the Mountain West championship conference over Fresno State. The Bulldogs still have a bowl game to play and are waiting
Fresno State Athletics have not released a statement on Haener’s transfer and who will be replacing him in the upcoming bowl game. Freshman Jaylen Henderson and sophomore Logan Fife are the second- and third-string quarterbacks that could fill in.
