In back-to-back weeks, Fresno State sophomore guard Haley Cavinder has been named Mountain West (MW) Conference player of the week.
This is Cavinder’s third time this season winning the award, making her the first MW athlete to collect a trio of player of the week awards since the 2018-2019 season. Last year she was named the MW freshman player of the year.
Over the past two weeks, Cavinder has helped the Bulldogs win four consecutive games, including series sweeps over Nevada and the reigning MW champions, Boise State. Cavinder has averaged 18.5 points during that span and recorded a season-high 30 points against Nevada on Jan. 14.
Fresno State had not swept Boise State in a two-game regular season series since 2014, and it had been the first time the Broncos were swept since 2016.
During that series against the Broncos, Cavinder averaged 16.5 points per game and eight rebounds per game. In both contests, she led in rebounds and steals, and she had a game-high five assists on Saturday.
Cavinder had a big play in Saturday afternoon’s win over Boise State. With less than 30 seconds left, the Bulldogs were holding on to a slim 63-62 lead. Maddi Utti set up a screen that gave Cavinder space to make a 3-point shot, putting Fresno State up 66-62. She scored and assisted in six of Fresno State’s last nine points. The Bulldogs held on to the lead and won the game, moving them up to first place for a three-way tie with Colorado State and New Mexico.
“We’re feeling really good,†Cavinder said after Saturday’s win. “Last year we felt like we had some unfinished business with them. Coming in here we were all really hyped and we didn’t just want to win one game. We wanted two and we got it done.â€Â
Cavinder recorded 11 of her 18 points in the second half of Saturday’s game. This is also her fourth game this season with at least three steals, and she has scored in double-digits in every single game played this season.
Fresno State has a two-game away series against New Mexico on Jan. 28 and 30.
