In an official statement on the “Inside the NCAA” Twitter account, the NCAA Division I Council Coordination Committee said it agrees “eligibility relief is appropriate for spring sports.”
The full statement reads:
“Council leadership agreed that eligibility relief is appropriate for all Division I student-athletes who participated in spring sports. Details of eligibility relief will be finalized at a later time. Additional issues with NCAA rules must be addressed, and appropriate governance bodies will work through those in the coming days and weeks.”
The announcement comes a day after the NCAA canceled winter and spring championships as well as all NCAA season competitions due to the coronavirus outbreak.
There is currently no word on the status of Division II and Division III eligibility.
Along with the agreement, the NCAA also placed an “immediate ban” on in-person recruiting for coaches and the recruiting dead period will be extended until at least April 15.
