Fresno State student, Nayeli Carrillo Gonzalez, was killed in a shooting at Cesar Chavez Park in her hometown of Delano on Thursday, Jan. 2, according to media outlets.
According to The Fresno Bee, the Delano Police Department stated that the 19-year-old Gonzalez was one of two victims shot at the park around 10:15 p.m., with Gonzalez being pronounced dead at the scene.
Delano Police Chief Robert Nevarez told KGET that three people approached Gonzalez and the other shooting victim in the park, argued with the two, then shot them.
Gonzalez was an undergraduate student at Fresno State in the College of Health and Human Services majoring in pre-social work.
Interim Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Carolyn Coon sent out a press release on behalf of the university addressing the death of Gonzalez.
Coon said in the release, “On behalf of the entire Fresno State community, we send our deepest condolences to Nayeli’s family and friends as we all mourn that Nayeli’s life and dreams for the future have been cut short.”
The university is encouraging students who may be affected by the death of Gonzalez to reach out to on-campus resources at the Student Health and Counseling Center available during this difficult time.
