According to multiple media outlets Thursday evening, Fresno State head coach Jeff Tedford is expected to step down following his third season as Bulldogs head coach.

It was announced Thursday by Fresno State Athletics that Tedford would hold a news conference on Friday at 9:15 a.m. to recap the 2019 football season and discuss the state of the program as a whole going forward following a disappointing 4-8 season.

Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports was the first to report the stepping down of Tedford via Twitter. Feldman stated that the resignation is due to health reasons.

According to ESPN, Tedford will be holding a coaching staff meeting on Friday morning and a team meeting afterward, where the players will be informed of the situation. Also reported, assistant coaches were told to return from recruiting trips for the meeting.

Tedford took over the football program in 2016 and has spent his first two seasons rebuilding the Bulldogs, following three dismal seasons from 2014 to 2016.

In his first season, Tedford completed one of the nation’s biggest turnarounds, going for a 1-11 record in 2016 to a 10-4 mark, a Mountain West (MW) Championship appearance and Hawaii Bowl win against Houston.

The 2018 season saw Tedford lead the Bulldogs to one of the best seasons in program history, finishing the season with a 12-2 record, a MW Championship victory over Boise State, a Las Vegas bowl win over Arizona State and a No. 18 ranking in the 2018 Associated Press poll.

Despite the previous success, the Bulldogs finished 4-8 this season.

According to Feldman, former Bulldog offensive coordinator and current Indiana offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer could be the leading candidates to replace Tedford.

Going forward, the resignation has huge implications for incoming recruits, players who have transferred to Fresno State and the quarterback situation.
