Looking for a new way to get a workout in without leaving campus?
Fresno State launched a brand new Fitness Court on Thursday, Oct. 3 next to the South Gym.
The court is an outdoor circuit training facility that is free to the public. The project is part of the Partnership for a Healthier America that Fresno State has been in commitment with since 2017. The campus is committed to meet 23 guidelines, and the court checked off number 21, according to Alicia Nelson, director of wellness at the Student Health and Counseling Center.
“The whole idea here is seven stations, seven movements in seven minutes,” Nelson said. “It’s really trying to be a quick circuit of about seven minutes. So about a 45 minute workout with a 15 second break to move around the sections.”
Students can download an app and learn more information about the court as far as how to use it and what exercises to do, along with some guided coaches.
“Right now, there are no set classes, but we are working closely with the kinesiology department, the student recreation center and our organizational excellence to do some employee classes,” Nelson said. “In the future, we hope to hold more instructor-led classes but at this point, it’s really open to anybody.”
Fresno State is one of the 20 colleges nationwide to have a fitness court on campus and is just the second college in California, according to Nelson.
To celebrate the grand opening, the Student Recreation Center and Wellness Services hosted a ribbon cutting and launch party. Intense 15-minute pulse classes were also offered at different times to challenge the upper body, lower body, core and flexibility.
The court was funded through multiple partners on campus. It came from the Division of Student Affairs, the Division of Administrative Services and the President’s Office.
“Huge win for campus as a whole and a really big collaborative effort to bring this to campus, and we just want people to use it,” Nelson said.
