For 14 Fresno State wrestlers, an opportunity has arisen for them to represent the USA at the 2019 U23 World Championships in Hungary, Budapest, on Oct. 28 through Nov. 3, but first they have to get past the U23 World Team Trials in Akron, Ohio.
Fresno State wrestling and the Valley Regional Training Center will send 14 student-athletes to Akron this weekend to compete, at the team trials on Saturday and Sunday on the campus of the University of Akron, at the Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House
Among the 14 wrestlers are, Robert Garcia IV (57 kilograms), Jeremy Trinh (61 kg.), Chris Deloza (65 kg.), Lawrence Saenz (65 kg.), Jacob Wright (70 kg.), Greg Gaxiola (74 kg.), Adam Kemp (74 kg.), Ricky Padilla (74 kg.), Beau Colombini (74 kg.), Angel Solis (79 kg.), Dominic Kincaid (86 kg.), Jackson Hemauer (86 kg.), Isaiah Perez (92 kg.) and AJ Nevills (125 kg.), representing Fresno State in the freestyle (FS) tournament. Finalists in each weight class will wrestle a best-of-three series to determine who will earn a spot on the USA team.
The competition will give the Bulldog wrestlers competing further experience, as three competitors redshirted this past season for the ‘Dogs while Trinh, Garcia IV, Wright, Colombini, Solis and Hemauer will be redshirt sophomores next season. Gaxiola, Deloza and Nevills, a two-time Big 12 runner-up and two-time NCAA Championship qualifier, will enter their junior seasons, while Padilla and Kincaid will be seniors.
