Fresno State wrestling coach Troy Steiner has been named as a volunteer coach for USA’s women’s freestyle team for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, according to a Fresno State Athletics news release.
It will be Steiner’s fourth trip to the World Championships as a woman’s freestyle coach, serving in 2003, 2007, 2015.
Steiner is entering his second season as Bulldogs wrestling coach after serving at the same position at the Universities of Oregon, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. He will also serve as personal coach to Bulldogs volunteer assistant wrestling coach, Joe Colon, who will wrestle for team USA at 134 pounds.
“I am excited to be a part of USA Wrestling and to help theses athletes work to achieve their goals of winning a World Championship,” said Steiner, according to the release. “We are also very excited to have Joe get a second chance to compete on this stage and hope he can seize the opportunity.”
Coaching alongside Steiner will be his brother Terry, who is the head coach of USA’s women’s national team, the release said.
