Twenty-two people were displaced by a fast-moving blaze that heavily damaged two units at the Arbor Place apartment complex near Bulldog Stadium Friday afternoon.

Fresno fire Battalion Chief Brad Driscoll said the department received calls around 2 p.m. reporting a fire on an upstairs balcony at the apartments on 5570 N.10th Street. “The first engine arrived to find heavy fire burning on a balcony. The fire was spreading into one of the apartments” by then, he said.

Driscoll said it took two alarms plus four additional engines to bring the fire under control. Fire units from Clovis and across Fresno responded to fight the blaze. Before it was brought under control, Driscoll said the fire spread to two apartments and extended into the attic. There was a partial roof collapse that led to an evacuation of fire fighters from inside the burning building, he added.

Driscoll said six units were affected by the fire, displacing the 22 people in all. He said no residents were hurt and “it’s unknown at this time whether the smoke detectors were activated. The investigators will try to determine that. The cause and origin of the fire is also undetermined.”

Driscoll was asked whether the first hydrant that fire fighters tried to get water from flowed water because it had been apparently vandalized. Driscoll declined to answer the question, but spoke about the importance of getting a water supply as soon as possible to fight fires.
