February is a month all about love and Fresno State is encouraging students to love themselves with its “I Heart Me” campaign.
The midday event on Wednesday took place on the University Student Union’s balcony, where open-air booths invited students in with bright colors and many activities promoting mental, spiritual, emotional and physical health. Students won prizes for visiting the different booths, which included gift cards to places like Ampersand.
Georgianna Long, a health educator, said February is a month where the focus is on love.
“But you need to love yourself on Valentine’s Day, too,” Long said. “You can love yourself healthy.”
Long referred to “healthy” in the sense that many college students suffer from depression, anxiety and addiction. And with new legislation in California, it is easier for college-aged students to gain access to drugs, Long said.
“With new laws in California about marijuana, we have to be more proactive,” said Sally Lam from the California Health Collaborative.
Student organization Peer Ambassadors of Wellness (PAWS) also attended with a self-affirmation mirror for students to try. The idea was for students to sit in front of the mirror, pull a slip of paper from a jar, and say the printed affirmation to themselves. They received a prize for doing so.
Danielle Mendoza, a graduate student studying counseling, helped host the booth.
“We’re showing students different ways to love themselves,” Mendoza said. “A lot of students suffer from anxiety and stress and depression. Everything around at this fair shows students ways to take care of themselves.”
The fair, which has now been held for five years, started with a suicide prevention grant awarded to Fresno State, said Arcellie Santos, the fair’s coordinator.
There are plans for this event to happen next year, and there will be activities held throughout February. The event calendar can be found on the Fresno State Health website.
