A Fresno State masters student was killed Sunday in a car crash on Highway 99 as rain drenched the Valley.
Mireyda “Mia” Barraza Martinez, 29, of Fresno, was killed in the crash, the Fresno Sheriff’s Office said.
Martinez was a teaching associate in English Department at Fresno State. She’s a grad student who was enrolled in MFA Creative Writing program, Fresno State said.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the sudden passing of graduate student and poet Mireyda Barraza Martinez. She died late Sunday in a multi-car crash on Highway 99 while visiting family in Porterville,” Fresno State’s MFA program said on Facebook. “Mia’s family has not yet set the date for services, but we are told that it will likely be early next week, after Thanksgiving.”
The crash occurred on Highway 99, just north of Highway 41 sometime after 7 p.m.
