A Fresno State child family and consumer science independent study class is using a program to focus on nutrition, physical activity and wellness to prevent childhood obesity in Hispanic families.
The program, Abriendo Caminos, which translate into Opening Pathways, allows students to gather data from participating families to measure the sessions’ effectiveness.
There are two-hour sessions on Saturdays which offers three 30 to 45-minute segments about obesity issues. They encourage healthy eating using traditional Hispanic dietary patterns, collective family mealtimes and physical activity.
The data will be analyzed in the spring to measure the program’s impact. The final cycle of the program will be in fall 2017.
