Picture yourself walking into a space and seeing college students having fun and dancing the night away.
It seems normal, right? Now imagine that exact scenario, but without any music heard throughout the venue.
That was the case Thursday night as USU Productions hosted Fresno State’s first-ever headphone disco. Held at the Satellite Student Union, Fresno State students had the chance to experience one of pop culture’s newest crazes — a silent disco.
“The students get headphones,” student event coordinator Sona Soghomonian said. “They’re wireless headphones, and there are three channels on them. They can switch back through all three channels, and the only music they’ll hear is through the headphones. It’ll be completely quiet other than that.”
Degy Entertainment, the vendor that provided the headphones, also provided the disc jockeys — DJ Thug Funny and DJ Cable. The students could listen to the DJs on the first two channels, and the third channel was an iPod playlist created by the production team.
Soghomonian, a fifth-year psychology major, said the idea to host a silent disco came to them after they attended a conference a few years ago.
“We met a bunch of vendors who come out to college campuses,” Soghomonian said. “They had a few headphones, and we tried them out. We thought it was so much fun and something different. We’re happy to finally have it on our campus.”
Shawna Blair, the program and event coordinator for student involvement, said the team did a lot of research over the last year but didn’t start planning the event until this summer.
“We’ve been wanting to do this for a while now,” Blair said. “But we wanted to wait until the beginning of the school year. Something fun and exciting for the students while they don’t have too much school work and are still excited about the new school year.”
Jaira Vazquez, a third-year criminology major, said the silent disco was a great stress reliever.
“You come here, get loose, have fun, dance and no one is judging you,” Vazquez said.
Vazquez and the other students danced the night away to different beats. But sometimes, they would sync and the dance floor moves as one — i.e. the “Cupid Shuffle.”
Anyssa Garza, a fourth-year family sciences major, said the event is a great opportunity to network”” when not dancing.
