The New Mexico Lobos used a five-run sixth inning to push them past the Diamond ‘Dogs for a 7-4 win during Sunday’s series finale at Santa Ana Star Field in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The first place Lobos (23-9, 12-3 MW) also edged the Bulldogs (21-12, 9-6 MW) in the first two games of the series on Friday and Saturday by scores of 2-1 and 14-13, respectively.

UNM got on the board first after a wild pitch brought home senior infielder Dalton Bowers. But the Bulldogs came back in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead after scoring a pair of two-out runs. Junior Austin Guibor got on base with a single, McCarthy Tatum followed with a ground-rule double to left center field and then Nick Warren came delivered a single to right to bring home the pair.

Fresno State increased its lead to 3-1 after a leadoff home run to left center field by Aaron Arruda, his seventh of the season.

Bulldogs’ starting pitcher Edgar Gonzalez limited the Lobos to just two hits through the first five innings before the Lobos began clawing their way back. New Mexico got things going with a leadoff double from sophomore Luis Gonzalez followed by three straight singles to give the Lobos a 4-3 lead.

Senior pitcher Tim Borst came in to replace Gonzalez and while he managed to retire the first two Lobo batters, he couldn’t put away the third. Bowers stepped up to the plate and delivered a single, which scored two more runs, putting New Mexico up 6-3.

The Lobos added another run in the seventh and the Bulldogs but only managed one run the rest of the game which came in the top of the eighth when a Jeremiah Burks’ single to right center field drove home Warren.

The ‘Dogs now return home to Pete Beiden Field, where they will play seven of their next eight.
