With less than a month left in the regular season, the Fresno State softball team is looking to secure its position atop the Mountain West Conference.
The Bulldogs inched closer to their goal Sunday with a sweep against the Boise State Broncos at Margie Wright Diamond.
After edging out the Broncos 4-2 on Friday, then 4-3 on Saturday, the Bulldogs cruised to a 5-0 win Sunday in the series finale on the third day.
The Bulldogs improved to 33-14 overall and are now 14-4 in Mountain West play. They sit alone atop the conference standings.
“We have found so many different ways to win games,” Fresno State head coach Trisha Ford said. “Sometimes it has been pitching, sometimes it has been baserunning, defense. So we have many different areas that at any time can win us ball games.”
Senior Brenna Moss opened up the scoring Sunday, when she singled up the middle and brought in designated player Bria Kennedy, who scored just under the tag at home.
Sophomore Malia Rivers followed up with an RBI single to score Moss, and the ‘Dogs took a 2-0 lead going into the fifth.
Rivers led the team going 3-for-3, while Moss, Kierra Willis and Chase LeeHong all recorded two hits. Kennedy posted one hit with one walk on the day.
The Broncos threatened in the top of the sixth with runners on second and third. But they fell short when junior right-handed ace Jill Compton struck out the next two batters to keep the Broncos scoreless.
Compton allowed five hits on the day to complete her third win of the weekend and her 22nd victory of the season.
“We’ve all progressed,” Compton said. “Taking everything one pitch at a time has been our goal. Getting the sweep is really important for us so we’re just continuing our same mind set that we had. I think the team has come a long way.”
The Broncos came into Sunday’s game sitting last in the conference. But the Bulldogs focused on their own position.
“We just try and worry about ourselves,” Compton said. “If we get what we need to get done, we’ll beat any team.”
The `Dogs will continue a two-week homestand against Nevada for senior weekend beginning Friday.
