The Fresno State lacrosse team’s got off to a fast start in its return home against UC Davis, but the quick-playing Aggies kept up and took down the Bulldogs 11-6 at the Soccer and Lacrosse Field on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs came out firing against the Aggies. Nicole Ortlieb and Caroline Dineen-Carlson both scored goals within the first seven minutes of the game. However, the Aggies scored six unanswered points over the next 30 minutes, leaving the score at 6-2 with 26 minutes left in the second half.
The ‘Dogs then recorded two quick goals by Logan Eisinger and Angelica Fuccillo with 21 minutes left in the second. Fresno State’s final goals were with two minutes left in the game, when Ortlieb and Eisinger each scored a goal.
“Our defense played really well,” said Fresno State head coach Jessica Giglio. “They played as a unit preventing things. We started capitalizing on our opportunities. I thought it started slipping away in the first half. We answered quickly and had it within two goals, but we weren’t finishing our attacking goals.”
Fresno State goalkeeper Meganne Weissenfels was 9-for-19 in goals saved in 51:37 played. UC Davis goalie Kai Murphy was 4-of-10 in 60 minutes.
“(Weissenfels) had a lot of saves and she’s doing really well for us. She’s a great goalie, and she had some tough one-on-one saves. I’m really proud of her, and we just need to keep supporting her by getting the ball on the attacking end. Because when it’s on the defensive end for so long, they are bound to score.”
The ‘Dogs will be back in action at home Sunday against the California Golden Bears at 2 p.m.
