Firefighters around the world and in the local community continue to rally in support of recovering Fresno Fire Capt. Pete Dern.
Dern sustained burns to two-thirds of his body after falling through the roof of a garage while battling a house fire on March 29. He is currently being treated at Community Regional Medical Center. Physicians estimate he will require 14 to 15 surgeries within the next several months.
āI was excited to hear that he was able to stand up and look to his window,ā said Julie Logan, Dernās aunt and KFSR program director. āEvery great thing youāve heard about him is true.āĀ
Logan said the Fresno Fire Department has provided great support.
ā[Fresno Fire Departmentās] brotherhood is remarkable and they have a constant presence in support at the hospital,ā she said. āI never saw less than 50 firefighters there when I went to see him.āĀ
Dern has received widespread support throughout the community, Āsparking several fundraising events for him and his family. A youcaring.com fundraiser was set up by Karey Wedemeyer to fundraise $2,000. The large outpouring from people in the community and across the world has raised more than $134,000 as of Sunday evening.
The āLights On for Capt. Pete Dernā campaign, started by one of Dernās neighbors, organizes nightly vigils supporting Dernās full recovery. It started on April 5 and has seen hundreds attend to show their support.
āIt started as a porch light thing. Itās crazy,ā Logan said. āItās everywhere, all across the country and many countriesā stations are showing their support. It has gone just as viral as the actual video [of the accident] did. Departments from all over the world āā Iām talking Germany, Belgiumāā are doing it.āĀ
Many communities in surrounding areas have also held blood drives for Dern and others.
āThe Central California Blood Center told me they have not seen this kind of response since 9/11,ā Logan said. āThey are grateful for everyone who has donated blood on his behalf.āĀ
ā[The family] values the prayers that are being said on Pete and the familyās behalf,ā she said.
