The Fresno State lacrosse team christened its new Soccer and Lacrosse Field with its second win of the season Wednesday night, 13-11, over the Campbell University Camels.
Sophomore midfielder Kyleigh Westgarth was perfect on the night, going 5-for-5 in shot attempts. Caroline Dineen-Carlson tallied four scores of her own, bringing her season goal total to a team-high 12.
“It was a great game all around,” said Fresno State head coach Jessica Giglio. “Westgarth had the best game she’s ever had. Caroline was fantastic on both the draw control and on the offensive end.”
Fresno State paced its play on the field and picked up 24 ground balls, compared with only six for Campbell.
Freshman goalkeeper Natalie Chaffin saved seven shots on the night against strong offense from the Camels.
Even though it was a high-scoring match, the game had a quiet start. Neither team scored in the first 10 minutes, until Dineen-Carlson threw in her first goal of the match. Campbell responded quickly to tie the score.
The ‘Dogs then pulled away, scoring the next three goals, two of them from Dineen-Carlson. The Camels would not go down in the first half without a fight, and they rallied to take the lead at 5-4 with 8:36 left in the first half.
However, the lead was not for long. Logan Eisinger tied the score with less than five minutes left until halftime, and Westgarth’s goal gave the ‘Dogs the lead heading into the break.
Campbell scored the first goal of the second stanza, and the Bulldogs responded with three straight to take a 9-6 lead. The Camels and ‘Dogs traded goals, before Campbell shortened its deficit to 10-9.
Fresno State then went on 2-0 run to extend its lead and held on for the win.
