The Fresno State women’s lacrosse team (2-6) took on the Winthrop Eagles (7-1) at the Fresno State Soccer & Lacrosse field Sunday.

Winthrop has the No. 5-ranked offense in the country, and it showed Sunday, as the ‘Dogs weren’t able to keep the Eagles out of the goal, falling by a score of 17-5.

Winthrop’s Jenna Kasmarik, who leads the nation in scoring at 5.29 goals per game, managed to score a game-high seven goals in Sunday’s match.

The Eagles’ offense scored eight-straight goals before the ‘Dogs got on the board behind freshman Nicole Ortlieb’s back-to-back goals, pulling the score within six. That was as close as the ‘Dogs would get. Winthrop would go on to outscore the ‘Dogs four goals to two before halftime, leaving the score 12-4 at the break.

The second half started with four unanswered goals by Winthrop before Caro Dineen-Carlson managed to net another goal with 11 minutes remaining. The ‘Dogs were outshot 28-12 and failed to record an assist in the game.

Fresno State recorded more ground balls than the Eagles at 12-9. The Eagles outpaced the ‘Dogs when it came to draw controls, however, at a rate of 17-8.

The ‘Dogs will have another home game Thursday against Monmouth at 7 p.m.
