The Fresno State women’s lacrosse team fell to the Oregon Ducks Monday 14-7 Monday afternoon at the Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

Freshman Nicole Ortlieb led the way for the ‘Dogs with four goals and one assist in the game, while sophomore goalkeeper Meganne Weissenfels recorded 12 saves in the game.

The Ducks came out firing to begin the game, with Oregon forward Carly O’Connell scoring two minutes in. The ‘Dogs responded a minute later with Ortlieb putting one in the back of the net off an assist by junior Anjelica Fuccillo. The Ducks would go on a 6-0 run throughout the next 20 minutes of play until Fresno State managed to get on the board again with another Orlieb goal with four minutes remaining in the half.

The first 15 minutes of the second half saw more of the same, as the Ducks outpaced the ‘Dogs with a 7-2 run in that span to put them ahead 14-4. The ‘Dogs refused to quit and rattled off three goals in the last five minutes of the game, ending the game with a 14-7 score.

“I think our attack executed much more like a unit in the second half,” Fresno State head coach Jessica Giglio said. “Nicole really led the attack for us in her off ball movement. Caroline [Dineen-Carlson] did a really great job on the draw again and a really great job running the attack. She didn’t have her usual scoring role because she was guarded stronger this game so she moved the ball around.”

Despite the loss, Giglio is content that the number of fouls her players are committing is going down. She also notes that good chemistry between her players have let to more efficient ball movement up the field.

The ‘Dogs will be on the road for their next game against Saint Mary’s Thursday for a 4 p.m. match.
