The Fresno State women’s lacrosse team (1-4) was not able to keep up in a 15-4 loss to conference rival San Diego State (4-2) at the new Soccer and Lacrosse Field Sunday afternoon.
Fresno State sophomore midfielder Caroline Dineen-Carlson was the highest scorer for the ‘Dogs in the game, with two goals on four shots on goal. Midfielder’s Logan Eisenger and Kyleigh Westgarth also managed to score a goal apiece for the ‘Dogs.
Freshman goalie Natalie Chaffin recorded a solid game despite the loss, tallying 10 saves while allowing 13 goals during the first 42 minutes of the game before being replaced by redshirt sophomore Meganne Weissenfels.
The Aztecs’ defensive schemes didn’t give the ‘Dogs a lot of opportunities to score. It showed in the difference between shots on goal, as the Aztecs recorded 30 to the Dogs’ 16. The Aztecs were led by sophomore Alex Watson who scored four goals and recorded a draw control in the win. The ‘Dogs were held scoreless for a 34-minute period starting from eight minutes left in the first half, lasting until there were only four minutes left in the game.
“We need to possess the ball when we have the ball on attack,” said Fresno State head coach Jessica Giglio. “We need to execute better, so that when we have the ball in our sticks they don’t have the ball in theirs.
“We need to execute our game plan and focus on draw controls, because this was an off day for us which led to major momentum shifts in the game.”
When asked if there was anything else she would like to add, Giglio simply said “a re-do.”
The ‘Dogs will look to get back on track at home against Bryant University this Wednesday at 3 p.m.
