The Fresno State women’s lacrosse team scored a huge preseason win against Occidental College with a score of 20-3 that saw nine different ‘Dogs register a goal, four of whom scored hat tricks.
Senior captain Marcy Levatino led the ‘Dogs with four goals and two assists, while fellow ‘Dogs Anjelica Fuccillo, Caroline Dineen-Carlson and freshman Nicole Ortlieb each had hat tricks to help Fresno State come out with a win.
Chelsea Hall and Lindsay Hobson both scored two goals apiece while sophomores Brooke Filgo and Kyleigh Westgarth also registered goals.
“There was so much spread out goal scoring; it shows how versatile we are on offense this year,” said Fresno State head coach Jessica Giglio. “Years past we’ve had one person (score most of the) goals, but this year we had nine players with a goal this game. It just shows you the versatility we have this year.”
Hobson also managed to record a team-high five groundballs and three draw controls, while Sophia Aragon registered two out of the nine turnovers Fresno State caused.
“Our defense is coming together real well,” said Giglio. “We had a bunch of different pressures we used including high and low pressures. I thought we had great communication and it’s nice to see other looks against us.
“I’m really proud of this team, I think we’ve come a really long way, as a team we really came together and it really showed in the score.”
Next week’s game comes against conference-rival Stanford where the ‘Dogs will look to get revenge on a team that beat them 19-5 last year.
“Stanford’s going to be a good opponent,” added Giglio. “We’re definitely going to be watching the film over this game, seeing all the good things we did and all the things we need to fine-tune. We just want to fine tune some of the options so we don’t start off like we did today, I know we scored goals but I think the execution piece can be a little bit cleaner.”
The season opener will be a conference game at Stanford on Feb. 18.
