The spring semester has begun, and it’s time to get outdoorsy. There’s no better way to relieve semester stress and tension than to lace up your boots and blaze a new trail.
The Central Valley is home to some of the most beautiful and scenic hikes in the country, and it’s time to explore them.
During these busy college years, it’s important to get outside once and awhile to stretch those legs. It’s not to say one shouldn’t unwind at Peeve’s Public House on a Saturday night, but wouldn’t you feel better about a pint if you hiked a little first? It’s time to get active, and you can do it on your own or take some friends with you.
To kick things off right this semester, I am recommending the South Shore Trail at Millerton Lake. This easygoing trail is popular among mountain bikers and trail runners but it is great for a day hike.
The trail is roughly four miles round trip and runs along the rim of the lake. Along the way you’ll have lake views as well as moments of forest cover and grasslands. From the trailhead, you will hike to McKenzie Point out to Winchell Cove and then circle back.
The terrain is relatively even; it is one of my favorite hikes in the area and takes about two hours to complete. There are numerous places to stop and explore the lakebed, and the trail offers views of the lake that many cannot see from their boats. There is no prior hiking experience required with this one, so just enjoy the day and the view.
From Fresno, travel north on Highway 41 to North Friant Road and follow it to the lake. The entrance fee is $10. The park road follows the lakeshore and continues until you come to Blue Oak Picnic Area.
Feel free to park there and start the hike along the road. After you reach the South Shore Picnic Area, which is marked by a sign, the route becomes more scenic and heads off onto an actual trail.
Be sure to pack a light lunch, plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes. Most importantly, be sure to have a good time, and tell your friends to take a hike too.
