Fresno New Music is hosting an event for Swarmius, a band that is rich in sound and variety.

The group Swarmius describes itself as a “San Diego classical surf punk collective,” and as, “a sonic fusion of classical meets modern-hip-hop, house-trance-techno.”

Dr. Kenneth Froelich, professor of music composition at Fresno State, organized the event and was impressed with the groups creative works.

“One of the band members contacted me and knew about Fresno New Music Festival,” Froelich said. “I was impressed with their creative works. There’s a lot of disciplines in classical genre. I enjoy their use of other genres like EDM, hip-hop and bringing it all into classical form.”

Froelich founded Fresno New Music in 2006 as an annual festival featuring guest composers and ensembles from the world of new classical music. In 2013, the event was redesigned as Fresno New Music, an ongoing concert series with a new focus on promoting all new music events within the greater Fresno area.­ ­

“For Fresno New Music we’re looking for new music to present to the series, based on if the music is unique or something new,” Froelich said. “Something I personally would enjoy, as well as something that challenges an audience while at the same time very engaging.­ It’s about trying to bring great classical music to Fresno.
