The Fresno State women’s soccer team had another doubleheader weekend against the Boise State Broncos on Friday and the Utah State Aggies on Sunday.
The weekend series both ended in the losses for the Bulldogs by a score of 2-1.
The first game of the weekend, against the Broncos, was played on the blue turf at Albertsons Stadium Friday night. There was no score until 11 minutes after the half, when Boise State scored on a Fresno State own goal to give it a 1-0 lead. The next score wasn’t until the 82nd minute, when the Bulldogs scored their only goal of the game.
Broncos forward Kelli Drobney scored the game-winning goal with 14 seconds left on the clock.
“We played a tough game against a quality opponent and came up short in the end,” Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. “We did everything right in the second half to get back in the game and try to steal the win.”
Sunday’s game contest against Utah State was scoreless after one half. With 19 minutes into the second stanza, Fresno State’s top scorer and Sysco Student-Athlete of the week, senior forward Jaycee Bingham, scored the first goal of the game.
Utah State forward Jessica Brooksby’s unassisted game-tying goal with six minutes left in the game sent the contest into overtime. The Aggies would go on to win after a Fresno State own goal in the 97th minute of the match, giving the ‘Dogs a 3-12-0 record overall and a 2-4 mark in Mountain West play.
“Despite the result, we played a very formidable game against one of the top teams in the conference,” Zwaschka said. “[We] did everything right to give them quite a scare on their home turf. They got back into it with an individual moment of brilliance and deserve credit for that.
“The own goal in overtime was our second heartbreaker of the weekend. I had full commitment from the players on the play and would only be disappointed if they were not willing to try to take responsibility for making big plays. It was a piece of bad misfortune, and we will shake it off.”
The Bulldogs will come home for their next weekend series, starting with a game against the Wyoming Cowgirls on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. They will then turn their attention to the Colorado State Rams this Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
“We are happy to be back home for next weekend’s matches, and I am certain my team will be ready to play. The heart and the fire to finish what we started are there. We are looking forward to next weekend and playing in front of our families, friends and fans,” said Zwaschka.
