The second-annual Sankofa Black Film Festival at Fresno State aims to spread knowledge of various issues in the black community.
The film series, presented by the Africana Studies program, began Oct. 8 with the screening of “The Great Debaters,” and will conclude Oct. 22 with the movie “Fruitvale Station.”
Dr. De Anna Reese, a history professor at Fresno State, helped organize the event.
“The AFRS Program sponsors this film festival to promote greater social awareness on issues affecting the Black community,” she said.
Wednesday’s installment of the Sankofa Film Festival will feature the ‘90s classic, urban coming of age story, “Boyz N the Hood.”
Tyler Udeze, a junior majoring in criminal justice, plans to attend the movie with a few of his friends.
“I’m a big fan of the movie and seen it countless times,” he said. “However I believe it will be more important to share in the experience of watching and bonding with friends and other students through unity.”
Janice Wallace, a sophomore majoring in social work, also shared her support for the film festival.
“I hope as a result of the movie, they will be able to empathize with some of the struggles African-Americans face on a constant basis,” she said.
The film will be shown at 5:30 p.m. in the Engineering East Building, Room 191.
