Halloween is right around the corner, and the Spirit Halloween store located on Willow and Shaw avenues has plenty of ideas for those looking to get into the holiday spirit.
Jasmine Lawson, the store’s manager, said the most popular costume for girls has been the character Elsa from Disney’s “Frozen.”
The costume’s popularity can be attributed to the movie’s success this year and its catchy “Let it Go” song, Lawson said.
Lawson also said there have been more women than girls choosing the icy-blue princess costume this Halloween season.
For men, the most popular choices have been the more classic go-to styles. Lawson said most men have been buying cowboy, Indian and ninja costumes.
There have also been more requests for retro, pop cultural costumes such as “Star Wars” and “Star Trek.”
“Some of them come in asking for Star Wars and Star Trek and, you know, some off-the-wall stuff that we haven’t seen in years,” Lawson said.
Wendy Torres, a Spirit Halloween employee, said people tend to favor what they see on television and films.
“People want to impersonate what they see,” Torres said. “They think it’s cool, I think, which it definitely is. It gets more recognized as well.”
Torres also said her favorite part of working in the store is helping people find just the right costume for their spooky night.
The Spirit Halloween store is also raising money for the Spirit of Children, a program that holds Halloween celebrations in children’s hospitals across the country as well as donating funds to child life departments. Local proceeds will help the Children’s Hospital Central California. Every dollar raised will go toward buying the children costumes, coloring books and other items.
Fresno State students can go to the 790 W. Shaw Ave. Spirit Halloween store location, show their student ID cards and can receive 10 percent off one item.
