The Fresno State women’s tennis team completed play in the Cal Nike Invitational Tournament on Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, California, with a strong performance from senior Anne Susdorf.
Susdorf had two wins on the final day of completion, her first against Cristina Saenz de Buruaga of Pacific, 6-3, 6-1. Then, she advanced to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Gold Singles Consolation Finals and defeated Stephanie Lin from Cal 7-5, 6-3.
The ‘Dogs finished their first tournament of the season 2 for 4 in singles play and a third round victory for one doubles pair.
During play on the second day, senior Tanya Murtagh was defeated by LaniRae Green of UC Davis 6-2, 6-3. Rana Sherif Ahmed defeated Gaelle Rey of San Jose State 6-4, 7-6. Sophie Watts was defeated by Danielle Flores of Saint Mary’s 6-0, 6-3 and Anneka Watts defeated Lyann Hoang from Cal 7-5, 6-1.
Sofya Malysheva and Aishwarya Agrawal were both defeated in the second round singles competition in straight sets before they teamed up and defeated Danielle Flores and Kareena Mango from Saint Mary’s 8-6 in the third day.
“This was our first tournament, so we had a rough start,” Murtagh said. “It was good to get some matches in and see where we are at and what we need to improve on.”
The ‘Dogs are looking to continue on an upwards momentum as the season continues, with the next tournament being the ITA Northwest Regionals, Murtgah said there will be tough schools but with the week and half of good practice beforehand she believes the team will be ready for it.
“We like to call ourselves fearless,” Murtagh said.
The next tournament the team will be competing begins in is the ITA Northwest Regionals in Palo Alto, Calif Oct. 10.
