The Fresno State women’s soccer team’s first road trip ended in losing fashion to both the Iowa Hawkeyes and Drake University Bulldogs.
Friday’s 0-3 loss against the Hawkeyes saw Iowa’s top scorer, senior Cloe Lacasse, score twice against the ‘Dogs. One goal came a minute after halftime, and the next with 20 minutes left on the clock. Freshman Aubree Larson tallied the last goal in the 71st minute. Even with 10 shot attempts, the ‘Dogs were not able to score a goal against Hawkeye goalkeeper Kiley Beck with her four saves.
Fresno State stayed in Iowa, but went to Des Moines, to visit ‘Dogs head coach Brian Zwaschka’s alma mater Drake University. The ‘Dogs fell behind early after a goal in the first couple of minutes. They held Drake to only two shots-on-goal attempts thereafter.
“We had a slow start today and were punished for it,” Zwaschka said. “In the second half, we played more for each other and got back into it with some fluidity, answering with a well-built goal.”
The second half saw the Bulldogs senior and top scorer Jaycee Bingham score in the 18th minute of the second half. Even after eight shots on goal in the second half, the ‘Dogs could not manufacture another goal. Drake scored the final goal on a header with 5 minutes left in the match to walk away with a 2-1 victory.
“Credit to Drake for making it very difficult for us,” Zwaschka said. “We have learned a lot this weekend on such a long and difficult road trip. We will regroup this week and try to take things we learned on the road back on the road with us next weekend.”
Fresno State (1-3) will head off to UC Irvine on Friday followed by Santa Clara on Sunday. The ‘Dogs will return home to Bulldog Stadium on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. to take on Cal State Fullerton.
