The Fresno State women’s soccer team lost 3-0 Friday night to the Cal State Fullerton Titans at Bulldog Stadium, the first game at home after two consecutive weekend away games.
The Bulldogs now have a 1-6 overall record as they prepare for their next week’s matchup with Cal Poly (2-4).
“Obviously we’re really disappointed,” head coach Brian Zwashcka said. “We felt like the lessons that we’ve been learning up to now were meant to continue to build off each other and improve. Today, we absolutely took a step backwards. Everyone is disappointed, but we have no one to blame but ourselves, so it’s only us that can pick up the pieces.”
Both teams failed to score in the first half. However, the Titans scored two quick goals in the second stanza: one in the 67th minute, followed by another in the 69th. Junior defender Morgan Batchellor scored the first off a corner kick. Sophomore midfielder Ali White scored the second. The last goal scored was off a penalty kick in the last seven minutes of the game, leaving the score at 3-0 at the end.
“The exact things that happened in those quick two goals were things we talked about in our pregame meeting,” Zwaschka said. “Somebody lost their concentration on the person whom we knew was the target, and credit to her for burying it.”
Fresno State recorded six shots during the match, compared with Cal State Fullerton’s 13. Six of the shots were on goal.
The Bulldogs face off against the Cal Poly Mustangs (2-4) this Friday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo, California, at 5 p.m.
The ‘Dogs have a total of two matches left until conference play starts on Friday, Sept. 26, when the Bulldogs’ will host the New Mexico Lobos.
