Held in February and September each year, New York Fashion Week is a series of events, lasting around seven to nine days in which international fashion collections are shown to buyers, the press and the general public.
It consists of numerous branded events, such as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York, as well as independent fashion shows. It’s one of the five major fashion weeks in the world, along with those in Paris, London, Berlin and Milan.
Over 100 shows were held by new and name-brand designers for the spring 2015 fashion week.
Here are highlights from on and off the runway:
DKNY SHOW
Donna Karen New York, more commonly known as DKNY, displayed plenty of color mixed in with geometry and sports elements. The line was a blend of street chic. The New York designer’s show symbolized the city’s multicultural roots through the array of colors used in her line.
Using different textures for the geometric garments, models strutted down the runway in chunky heels. The designer definitely didn’t shy away from using bright reds, yellows, blues and more.
Miley Cyrus
The pop singer is best known for her on-stage antics and her personal life. Fashion Week was a first for Cyrus to be known as a designer.
She joins the ranks of many other celebrities who have contributed to fashion lines. Cyrus added to designer Jeremy Scott’s show through her eclectic assortment of jewlery—made of children’s alphabet beads, toys and other trinkets.
Scott’s own outfits also included some of Cyrus’ creations that featured multicolored ensembles and beaded headgear.
Michael Kors
With pals and audience members consist of Heidi Klum, Mary J. Blige and more, Kors was ready to impress not only the high-profile women in the room with his ready-to-wear spring collection, but also the everyday woman.
Many of the garments were covered with floral prints, but with a twist of his classic sportswear looks. A crisp, white shirt with French cuff links and a long, embroidered, brilliant yellow, flowery skirt was one of his more fantastic pieces.
Betsey Johnson
Johnson has made herself known for her wacky wardrobe taste and is never afraid to step out of the box for Fashion Week. This time around, she didn’t disappoint. Johnson’s theme was a celebration of freedom in marriage.
Her models, or “brides,” included drag queens, reality stars, starlets and more characters to play up her flirty runway. Her brides wore multicolored ruffles with tiers of silver and teal and loads of heavy, colorful makeup.
In a sort of preview to her stint on the upcoming season of “Dancing with the Stars,” Johnson closed the show by dancing around with her partner, Tony Dovolani, on stage.
Kendall Jenner
Rising these past two years in the industry as a high-fashion model in her own right, outside of her family (the Jenner-Kardashians), Jenner’s runway work became even more credible this season.
Jenner with Naomi Campbell made a debut together wearing Diane von Furstenberg’s French Riviera-inspired Spring 2015 collection. Those not “keeping up” with the model might be surprised to find that she has already worked for labels like Givenchy, Chanel and Marc Jacobs.
Keep an eye on Jenner, along with Cara Delevingne, Hailey Baldwin, Georgia May Jagger and other young girls as they are quickly rising as fashion’s go-to “IT” girls.
Young Designer
At age 13, Isabella Rose Taylor did something that most designers aspire to accomplish at some point in their careers: Her work debuted at New York Fashion Week.
Sponsored by Dell, Taylor’s fashion line can be seen as a feminine but grungy look with her use of monochrome colors. Taylor also already has a line for juniors made exclusively for Nordstrom.
Tech Chic
Rebecca Minkoff’s designs are known to be of the casual luxury assortment in handbags, accessories and apparel. Her playful collection showcased further, when her models were accessorized by 3D glasses. She also debuted a smart bracelet to go along with her casual garments.
Britney Spears
Spears adds the title of fashion designer to her resume as she debuted her lingerie line. The Intimate Britney Spears Collection is a new line of sleepwear. The popstar created the lingerie that features color matching palettes, and was said to be inspired by the softness of flower’s petals.
Christian Siriano
The former TV designer, who was known for his saying of “Fierce!” on Project Runway, solidified his status as a fully-fledged designer. Siriano usually designs collections strictly monochromatic in color; this time around, he added cool tones to his elegant designs.
Intricate crystal details with sharp, cut patterns took to the runway. Most of his silhouettes consisted of arctic blues and glass-inspired greens. The tailored gowns will be useful for any formal red carpet.
