The Fresno State men’s tennis team finished the 2014 St. Francis Health ITA Men’s All-American Championship at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Monday.
Fresno State senior Sai Kartik Nakireddi represented Fresno State for the qualifying rounds that began on Monday. He fell to George Goldhoff from Texas in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
Bulldog freshman Adam Glynn was a standout during the tournament, defeating two opponents on Saturday during the first and second rounds of pre-qualifying singles, before falling on Sunday during the third round to Michael Tenzer of Wisconsin-Green Bay 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
Head coach Evan Austin said Glynn has a lot of potential and the way he plays is more like a junior or senior, so the sky is the limit.
“There aren’t a lot of freshmen in the country that went out and did as well as he did right away,” Austin said.
Sophomore Eric Komati fell in the first round to Alex Gornet from Lousiville, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5). Junior Nikolas Papic was defeated by Nick Papac of Oklahoma 6-1, 6-2 during the second round on Saturday.
“The All-American is basically the toughest competition in the country,” Austin said. “Pretty much every top player is there. We competed really well.”
Austin said the tournament was a good place for the team to see where they’re at and what to improve on.
“I think the biggest thing for us is when we get into winning positions is to have the confidence to close matches out,” he said. “I think we’re going to be in that position a lot this year and it’s going to come down to pressure points.”
This is the Bulldogs’ second tournament of the season, after they kicked off at the Napa Invitational earlier in September, where they split the singles, winning six of 12 games and won two of three in doubles play.
The ‘Dogs travel to Davis, California, next for the UC Davis Fall Invitational from Friday, Oct. 3 to Sunday, Oct. 5.
