The Fresno State men’s golf team finished in fourth place at the Saint Mary’s Invitational in Seaside, California, on Tuesday after a strong second round on Monday.
The ‘Dogs went into the second round at 11-over-par (299) and finished the second round shooting 5-under (283), sharing fourth place with the University of Pacific.
Sophomore Michel Pugh and freshman Justin Avery finished the day tied at 19th at 2-over (146), and senior Keenan Nelson and freshman Cody Riecks finished sitting tied in 33rd position shooting 4-over (148).
In the three rounds of the tournament, the Bulldogs shot 299, 283 and 295 to end up with a total score of 877. They scored 7-over in the third round.
Pugh finished the tournament tied at 4th at 3-under par, scoring a total of 213 and finishing strongly in the third round at 5-under (67). Riecks and Nelson finished tied at 38th at 9-over par, both totaling 225 and finishing the third around at 5-over.
Avery completed the tournament tied at 42nd and 8-over par, with 226 combined strokes and ending the third round at 10-over par. Senior Neil Bautista rounded out the team finishing tied at 48th at 11-over, shooting 74 in the third round at 2-over and totaling 227 points for the tournament.
The Bulldogs have now competed in two tournaments for the season, having placed 11th at the Wolverine Intercollegiate Classic Tournament on Sept. 6-7. The next tournament is the Nick Watney Invite on Sept. 29 and 30 at the Sunnyside Country Club in Fresno.
Women’s golf improves in Minnesota
Improvement in play helped the Fresno State women’s golf team finish three spots up at the Minnesota Invitational on Tuesday. The ‘Dogs ended in 11th place after finishing Monday’s round in 14th place.
Junior Hannah Sodersten was leading the team tied at 31st in individual matches at 10-over and a score of 154 (76, 78), followed by senior Madchen Ly who was tied at 39th at 11-over (79, 76). Sophomore Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir finished tied at 45th at 12-over (78, 78). Freshmen Samantha Spencer and Mimi Ho finished the first two round tied at 59th and 62nd, respectively.
The Bulldogs were looking to finish the tournament off with a strong final round on Tuesday, they moved up the leaderboard three places to finish 11th, led by a strong final round from Ly. The ‘Dogs finished the tournament 60-over par, at 12-over in the third round and closing the tournament with a combined score of 924.
The ‘Dogs were led by Ly and Sodersten who finished tied at 21st at 12-over (228). Ly shot 1-over (73) in the final round, Sodersten was 2-over par (74). Björgvinsdóttir tied at 42nd, 16-over (232) and completed the tournament at 4-over (76) in the third round. Ho finished tied at 58th at 22-over, and Spencer at 59th shooting 23-over-par.
The Bulldogs return home for the next tournament, the Fresno State Classic, held at the San Joaquin Country Club Oct. 6-7.
