The Collegian won seven awards Saturday in the California College Media Association’s annual competition, including first place for Best Features Page Design.

Assistant news editor Brianna Vaccari and Megan Rupe and editor in chief Ricardo Cano placed second and third, respectively, for Best Breaking News Story. Vaccari and Rupe were recognized for their reporting of the Dec. 5 blackout that caused class cancellations the following day and trapped three students in elevators. Cano’s story on the hiring of President Joseph Castro earned The Collegian’s second award in the category.

“It’s a very humbling and validating experience to be recognized by the CCMA for the work we’ve produced,” Cano said.

Rachel Taylor won third place in the competition’s Best News Story for reporting on the university’s outdated electrical infrastructure system.

Vaccari won third place for Best Front-Page Design, her second award of the night which recognized The Collegian’s Aug. 30 front page centered on the Fresno State football team’s season-opening overtime win against Rutgers.

Former Collegian editors Dalton Runberg and Roe Borunda both won second place in Best Personal Opinion Column and Best Sports Photo, respectively.

The Collegian competed in the association’s Division A, reserved for the student newspapers in the state with the most frequent publication days during the week.
