A Hispanic woman in her 40s is in critical condition after being shot by a 55-year-old Fresno man who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the University Inn on Shaw Avenue across from the Save Mart Center Wednesday evening, Fresno police said.
Police responded to a call made by the motel’s front desk at 5:19 p.m. after the woman called the front desk for help.
The woman, who was conscious, was taken to Community Regional Medical Center by ambulance.
Arturo Ruelas, a Hispanic man shot the woman in her upper torso before shooting himself in the chest in one of the rooms of the motel. Police had to kick the door open to get inside.
No other suspects were involved in the incident, police said.
“Romance was involved,” Fresno Police Lt. Joe Gomez said. “We’re not sure exactly what it was about.”
There was no evidence that drugs or alcohol were involved.
