The Fresno State men’s basketball team’s 5-game win streak ended Tuesday night at the hands of the Wyoming Cowboys 72-66 in Laramie, Wyo.
It was the second consecutive time the Cowboys ended an opponent’s win streak on their court. Last Tuesday, the No. 6 San Diego State Aztecs lost their first game in 20 at the Arena-Auditorium.
Wyoming senior guard Nathan Sobey’s career-high 26 points and Larry Nance, Jr.’s 7 of 9 shooting for 17 points were keys in the Cowboys victory. With about 15 minutes left in the game, Nance left with a right-knee injury.
Wyoming led by two at halftime, but the ‘Dogs got within reach of establishing a lead when they knotted the game in the 8th minute of the second half at 40.
After the Cezar Guerrero jumper that tied the game, Wyoming went on a 7-0 run to establish a lead and eventually held on for the win. The Cowboys’ 52.9 percent shooting in the second half was what enabled then to pull away.
Fresno State had three players in double figures. Senior guard Tyler Johnson shot 8 of 15 for a team-high 24 points. Sophomore Marvelle Harris’ 18 were next on the team followed by Cezar Guerrero’s 13.
This was the second meeting between the ‘Dogs and Cowboys this season. Fresno State won the Jan. 29 meeting 67-62, starting the 5-game win streak the Bulldogs had prior to this contest.
Now on a 3-game win streak, the Cowboys will head to Fort Collins, Colo., this weekend to take on Colorado State Rams.
The Bulldogs, now seventh in the Mountain West, will play their second consecutive road game on Saturday, Feb. 22 in Logan, Utah against the eighth-place Utah State Aggies.
