Four students gave a presentation about Indian culture Tuesday in the Henry Madden Library during the first International Coffee Hour of the semester.
“This is a weekly event to introduce international students here,” said Makoto Saito, a Japanese international student who gave a presentation last year.
“So those people come here and represent their country,” he said. “It’s not only from the textbook side. They actually live there, so they explain the culture from their perspective — what the reality is.”
Indians represent a significant portion of the science, computer and medical communities, the speaker said, giving examples of companies like IBM, Microsoft, NASA and Xerox.
The presentation also showed a clip of “The Big Fat Indian Wedding” and featured a small exhibit of Bollywood film and Indian Music.
India is the largest English-speaking nation in the world. It has the world’s largest postal network and massive rail infrastructure, explained the presenters.
“Fresno State has about 500 international students and it’s pretty diverse — from all over the world,” Saito said. “Many people have a general idea of each country, but they don’t know the region or culture, so it’s a really great time to know the country.”
