We are halfway through the 2013 NFL season, and there have been a lot of surprises in the league (Kansas City Chiefs) and disappointments (New York Giants). It is also a bye week for many teams, which means people are going to rush for the last-minute saving grace for their empty squads.
Here are three people to consider signing for your roster needs ”” and three others that are performing below expectations this season.
YES
1. Nick Foles
(Philadelphia – Quarterback)
Foles stunned a nation Sunday when he posted 406 passing yards and seven touchdowns in the Philadelphia Eagles’ 49-20 rout of the Oakland Raiders. He definitely made the people who own him very, very happy last week. All 6 percent of them.
As of Thursday, his ownership rating (in NFL.com fantasy leagues) has improved to 29 percent, showing that people are wary of choosing him. Even I had to think about whether or not I wanted to add him, but my usual starting quarterback is on a bye week, so he’ll make a great backup.
This week, the Eagles are visiting Green Bay, so it will be interesting to see how it will all play out.
2. Rashad Jennings
(Oakland – Running back)
In the midst of the Oakland Raiders’ running back woes ”” Darren McFadden is out, again ”” Jennings has shown to be the depth that Oakland needs.
Contrary to the Eagles’ production behind center, the Raiders thrived off their running game in the loss. He ran for 102 yards and a touchdown, scoring his fantasy owners nearly 24 times as many points as two weeks ago.
McFadden did not attend Thursday’s practice, according to Comcast SportsNet, which means Jennings will most likely get the chance to shine in New Jersey against the New York Giants on Sunday.
3. Tim Wright
(Tampa Bay – Tight End)
Although the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had an abysmal season, Wright has put up respectable numbers the past couple of weeks. In Week 8 against Carolina, he had five catches for 48 yards and a touchdown.
Week 9 at Seattle, he caught four passes for 58 yards, earning fantasy owners double-digit points for the second week in a row.
His numbers are steadily increasing, and expect him to get more catches this week when Tampa Bay hosts the Miami Dolphins ”” a team with issues in the locker room.
NO
1. Aaron Rodgers
(Green Bay – Quarterback)
Do you remember the feeling you had when you found out Santa wasn’t real? Or how about the helplessness you felt when your credit card was declined at a fancy restaurant?
Well, that’s how Green Bay Packers fans felt when their all-pro quarterback suffered a broken collarbone during the Packers’ loss against Chicago.
Surprisingly, with a timetable of 4-6 weeks, people are not itching to drop him. Instead, he has only lost 1 percent of ownership ”” from 100 percent to 99 percent.
The thing is: if you are going to keep Rodgers, at least have a good backup (see No. 1 above). Or, just prepare to waste a roster spot. No, I’m not saying all hope is lost ”” after all, he could be back by Thanksgiving. What I’m saying is, he’s going to have a lot of work cut out for him, and if your team relies on him, then you need to work on your depth.
2. Jacquizz Rodgers
(Atlanta – Running back)
I was one of those people who signed Rodgers back in Week 5 when Atlanta Falcons starting running back Steven Jackson suffered a hamstring injury. Rodgers performed well, rushing for 43 yards and two scores in the contest.
Aside from a 46-receiving-yard campaign against Tampa Bay, Rodgers has not produced recently ”” and Jackson returned from his injury, forcing Rodgers back to the backup spot. If you’re looking for a running back who will lead the team ”” keep shopping.
3. Ryan Matthews
(San Diego – Running back)
Matthews, who posted two straight 100-yard weeks (6 and 7), only ran for 34 yards in the San Diego Chargers’ rout of the Washington Redskins.
And that broke a lot of hearts. So much so that in the NFL fantasy leagues alone, 3,822 teams dropped him this week.
I’ll give him some credit ”” he is a Fresno State alum. But in an inconsistent Chargers squad that is getting ready to host the Denver Broncos, there is not a great chance that he will reach 100 yards rushing ”” or even 50.
