The Fresno State women’s volleyball team took one out of three games over the weekend in the Portland Nike Invitational.
Despite the losses, the tournament was still a record-setting moment for right side hitter Holly Franks. During Saturday’s game against the Wichita State Shockers, Franks served seven service aces, a school record.
“I definitely kept my focus,” Franks said. “I just stuck with the game plan and went for the passers who were weak.”
Freshman libero Maggie Eppright started a game for the first time in her career, and led the team with 14 digs.
After dropping the first set, 25-19, Wichita State kept their leads in the second and third sets. The fourth set saw lead changes early, but the Shockers quickly took control and won the set 25-11.
The Bulldogs entered Portland strong, sweeping the hometown Portland Pilots in the first game 25-21, 25-20, 25-19. Senior Korrin Wild led the team with 10 kills and Marissa Brand led in total attacks with 23.
In the second game of the tournament, the Bulldogs faced the Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars, who were in the NCAA Regional semifinal last season. The Bulldogs kept up with the Cougars in the first set, changing the lead of the set eight times. Four of those changes happened in the final points of the set.
The Cougars dominated the second set. They took eight out of the first 12 attempts and forced the Bulldogs to take two early timeouts. The Cougars continued their assault and won the set, 25-13.
The Bulldogs tried to stay close in the third set, staying close behind when the point total hit double-digits (12-10), but BYU would score the next six out of seven points and increased the score to 18-11. Fresno State would not let the game get too far out of hand, as a couple of blocks and service aces brought the Bulldogs within six. But the Cougars would score three more times to win the set and the match, 25-16.
Wild and Brand shared the team lead with 10 kills in the match. Wild also had three service aces.
