The Fresno State Bulldogs women’s soccer team traveled to the state of Washington and came up on top, winning both weekend games against the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Eastern Washington Eagles.
Fresno State had a simple victory against Gonzaga, 1-0. Ariana Holmes scored her first career goal, a free kick from midfield, in the 24th minute of the match. Goalkeeper Katie DeVault blocked two shots to prevent Gonzaga from tying the game. She is now third on the Bulldogs’ list in blocked shots with 241.
The Bulldogs and the Eagles battled in a longer bout, reaching two overtime periods before Fresno State won the game.
In the 12th minute, senior Morgan Castain started the scoring for the Bulldogs. Located in the right side of the box, she planted the ball in the upper left hand corner of the goal. The Eagles refused to be shut out, Alisha Stott scored in the 39th minute to tie the game 1-1.
The Eagles changed the lead early in the second half. Cassie Black scored a goal in the 63rd minute to make it 2-1 Eagles. Shonice Myers would return the favor for the Bulldogs, redirecting an Alisha Stott free kick past goalkeeper Nathalie Schwery to tie the game 2-2.
The game remained tied at the end of regulation and the first overtime period. No time was wasted in the second overtime. Castain scored her second goal of the game in the first minute to seal the victory for the Bulldogs 3-2.
The Bulldogs are now 2-3, and will visit the University of California, Riverside on Sept. 13.
