After dropping its home opener against Santa Clara, the Fresno State Bulldogs’ women’s soccer team will go on the road for two games against Gonzaga University and Eastern Washington University.
Today, the Bulldogs will face another Bulldogs team: Gonzaga. Gonzaga is 1-2 this season, having lost road games at Tulsa and Oklahoma State. Amy Edwards is in her fifth year for the team and has a 32-46-4 record as Gonzaga head coach. Last year, they finished with an 8-11-1 record.
A key player for Gonzaga is junior midfielder Kasey Rubosky. Rubosky led the team with 10 points and four goals last season. This season, she has two shots, one of them a shot on goal. Senior Emily Eckmann and redshirt sophomore Mikayla Anderson have one goal apiece, which leads the team.
Gonzaga goalkeeper Susan Brown had three shutouts in 20 games played last season, ranking her 10th in the West Coast Conference (WCC). Brown was fifth in the WCC in saves per game, with 4.35.
On Saturday, Fresno State will travel 20 miles south to Cheney, Wash., to face the Eastern Washington Eagles. The Eagles dropped their opening match of the season against Gonzaga, when Anderson scored her first career goal near halftime.
The Eagles finished 2012 with a record of 6-8-4 (3-3-3 in Big Sky Conference play). It will be the first time they will face Fresno State, and both teams have experienced similar fortunes to start the 2013 season. Both Fresno State and Eastern Washington have yet to score a goal and have a 79 percent save percentage.
Head coach George Hageage returns for his 14th season as Eagles coach. All time, he is 66-146-20.
The Eagles return two players who were voted on the All-Big Sky second team: senior defender Brianna Brannan and junior forward Cassie Black.
After Eastern Washington, the Bulldogs will return to California to face the University of California, Riverside Highlanders.
