No. 25 Fresno State (3-0, 1-0 Mountain West Conference) arguably finished its toughest slate in its schedule this season — beating Rutgers in the season opener and Boise State on Friday with one-point wins.
Now, a month after playing their season opener, the Bulldogs will go on the road against Hawaii Saturday, kicking off a part of the Buldogs’ schedule that is noticeably weaker compared to what the Bulldogs have been up against.
Hawaii and Idaho (Oct. 5) are both winless at a combined 0-7.
Last year, Fresno State cruised to a 45-10 win against the Warriors at Bulldog Stadium.
The Warriors finished last season 3-9 in second-year coach Norm Chow’s first season.
The last time the Bulldogs went to Aloha Stadium, however, they lost in the Hawaii Bowl to Southern Methodist 43-10.
Fresno State will depart for the 2,500-mile trip to Hawaii on Thursday, focused on its Mountain West opponent — not the past.
“This isn’t a pleasure trip,” Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter said. “This is a business trip. We’re doing things very different. We’re going to be going on Thursday and staying away from Waikiki Beach. It’s just going to be like going out to camp and being focused on one game.
“We’ll use that as far as our preparation — the analogy of the Hawaii Bowl — but that’s it. I think they’re a much improved team, especially on the defensive front. Their defensive front is strong against the run.”
Though there are specific challenges toward playing at Hawaii beyond the opponent, DeRuyter said.
“Last year going to the Hawaii Bowl wasn’t my first trip out there,” he said. “But it has its own set of unique challenges when you go out there: the length of the trip, the time difference, the beauty that our players look at when they get there. Sometimes guys can get distracted.”
Hawaii startingquarterback uncertain
Hawaii, which played four quarterbacks in its 31-9 loss to Nevada on Saturday, has not established a starter under center against Fresno State.
Taylor Graham, the usual starter, suffered a left elbow injury in the first half against the Wolf Pack and is questionable for Saturday’s game. Sean Schroeder scored Hawaii’s lone touchdown of the game after taking over for Graham.
Graham, an Ohio State transfer, has completed 35 of 76 passes (a completion percentage of 46 percent) for 380 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions this season.
DeRuyter praised Graham for his size (he’s 6-feet, 5-inches and 235 pounds) and his release, but said he was not concerned about preparing for Hawaii with the uncertainty of whom it will start at quarterback.
“I think the offense didn’t change a whole lot with the other quarterbacks, but obviously they bring different skill sets,” DeRuyter said. “We’ll prepare for Graham and look at the other guys, and we’ll go from there.”

Good luck in Hawaii boys, don’t let the time difference put you off!
