Leggings, boots and sweaters, oh my! As the weather cools down, Fresno State students are getting ready to rock some of fall’s biggest trends.
Mandeep Kloy, president of Fashion Inc., an on-campus club geared toward promoting the fashion merchandising program at Fresno State, said she sees boots and leggings trending as colder weather approaches.
“Fall colors will be very popular, from all types of yellows to blues,” Kloy said. “Head accessories such as beanies and knitted headbands will also be in.”
Kloy said fall fashion trends tend to be more casual because it doesn’t get cold enough in the Valley to wear clothes for extremely cold conditions.
“A lot of people will be wearing their Uggs, but I have also seen a newer trend with people wearing skinny jeans paired with combat boots,” Kloy said.
For men, Kloy said plaid shirts are a good staple.
“Men’s must-have this fall is a good pair of jeans and a good hooded-leather jacket,” Kloy said.
Although some guys dress casually for school, she said they can rock scarves, green or olive-tone jackets and cuffed denim pants.
Nancy Hang, vice president of Fashion Inc., said fall colors will be popular, allowing fashion to match the season.
While fall colors are in, Hang said big jackets are out.
“I see people going more toward a fashionable blazer-like jacket,” Hang said. “More and more girls are also starting to wear leggings with different kinds of boots.”
As it gets colder, Hang said fleece long-sleeved shirts will be in style along with anything comfortable and soft.
However, Hang said style has no rules.
“Everybody has their own sense of style, but as for me, I definitely got my inspiration from all the people that I see around campus,” Hang said.
She said choosing what to wear can sometimes reflect more than style. She said the clothes you pick can reflect your emotions.
“Some people dress according to what mood they’re in to reflect on how they feel,” Hang said.
She said she doesn’t have a specific designer that she follows, and everyone has his or her own taste and way of dressing.
“Fashion is a part of your identity because you are portraying yourself through how you dress and how you want to present yourself to the public,” Hang said. “For fashion itself, you have to present yourself in a way that you can accept yourself for who you are.”
Niesha Blancas, a Fresno State student double majoring in fashion merchandising and public relations, said fall fashion trends will include a wide variety of leathers, paired with either knitted sweater or furs.
Blancas said knee-high and thigh-high boots will be big as well.
“Doc Martens are going to be in and more popular this coming fall because of the whole grunge scene,” Blancas said.
Also because of the grunge scene, Blancas said a London-inspired look will be trending.
“I see this scene as being self-spoken, so you want to dress the way you want people to perceive you,” Blancas said. “It’s not about matching anymore.”
