Fresno State center Robert Upshaw was dismissed from the men’s basketball program on Wednesday for violating Athletic Department policy, the university announced via a release.

Upshaw, who was suspended twice for violating the department’s policy during the 2013 season prior to the third and final infraction that led to his dismissal, was notified on Wednesday afternoon, the release said.

The 7-foot rising sophomore was highly touted coming out of San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno, but struggled with injuries early last season before his second suspension led him to miss the Mountain West Conference Tournament.

Upshaw played in 22 of 30 games last season — five of those games he started for the Bulldogs. He averaged 5.3 points and 3.8 rebounds last season.

Fresno State finished 11-19 last season in coach Rodney Terry’s second year with the program.

“This will be Fresno State’s only comment on the matter,” the Athletic Department’s release said.
