On the eve of Saturday’s scrimmage, which will give coaches an inside look at the level of the players, Fresno State is looking energetic and well prepared.

However, it will be a few days before the Bulldogs’ starting lineups are set. The running back and one of the cornerback positions are still up for grabs — where there is plenty of competition.

“There’s a few different positions that we’re still looking at evaluating; our offensive line is not 100 percent set,” Bulldogs coach Tim DeRuyter said after Friday afternoon’s practice. “When you get in scrimmage situations, that’s where the true evaluations take place.”

At cornerback, Curtis Riley, Shannon Edwards and Jamal Ellis are competing for the spot opposite of starter L.J. Jones.

Riley, who has only been practicing with the team for a week, has made an impression, and he isn’t the only impressive newcomer at practice. Overall, DeRuyter is proud of the new additions.

“We’ve had some guys flash,” DeRuyter said. “Malique Micenheimer has really been impressive so far and Colin McGuire definitely has a leg. Tomorrow will be a big indicator of where we’re at.”

Micenheimer, Josh Quezada and Marteze Waller are three running backs leading the search for Robbie Rouse’s replacement in the backfield. For Micenheimer, the competition is friendly, yet aggressive.

“Guys are competing, running hard and working to learn their playbook fast,” he said.

The first week of practices has not seen much live tackling. With Saturday’s scrimmage, the players will be able to showcase their abilities, as the team will practice different plays and situations all over the field.

Derek Carr’s participation in the scrimmage will be situational; he’ll probably appear in “30 to 40 percent” of the simulated game, DeRuyter said.

Sunday will be the first off day for the Bulldogs since camp began. Practice will resume on Monday with their third two-a-day practice.
