The Fresno State outdoor women’s track and field team swept UNLV and Cal Poly on Saturday at Buchanan High’s Veterans Memorial Stadium in the Fresno State Women’s Challenge — an event that saw several Bulldogs set personal records.
The Bulldogs beat Cal Poly 100-68 and the Lady Rebels 95-75 with the Bulldogs taking first place in nine events.
Annemarie Schwantz set a personal record with her first-place time of 9:57.22 in the 3,000-meter race.
In the 1,600-meter sprint medley, the team of Je’Nia Sears, Tanae Turner, Breeauna Thompson and Kyra Johnson posted a time of 3:57.13 for the win — and the seventh-fastest time in the nation this season.
“Anytime you can get a win it’s a great thing,” Fresno State coach Scott Winsor said. “We’ve competed well three weeks in row, and today the women stepped up and competed hard in some events they’re not accustomed to.
“We got a group of ladies that really put their heart and soul in this, and the results show.”
In the 4 x 100, Sears, Turner, Thompson and Shakira Lewis set a season-best time of 45.98 seconds and won the event .01 seconds over UNLV.
Sears placed first in the long jump, with a mark of 5.85 meters and has placed first in the event in all three meets she has competed in this season.
Thrower Megan McKee set a new personal record in the hammer throw. Her 58.57-meter throw earned her first place and ranked as the school’s all-time third-ranked distance in the hammer.
Freshmen sisters Kyra and Dezirae Johnson placed first and second, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles, with Kyra timing in at 1:01.21 for first place. Dezirae timed in at 1:01.28.
