On Saturday afternoon in the Save Mart Center, the Fresno State volleyball team lost to San Diego State in four sets.
The Bulldogs (16-9, 7-4 MW) began the match with a first set-win, but the Aztecs responded by taking three-straight sets for the victory.
Bulldogs’ setter Barbara Alcantara led the team with three aces, and outside hitter Korrin Wild collected her 13th double-double of the season. She totaled 14 kills and 13 digs. Junior Lauren Albertson also came up big for the ‘Dogs, hitting .478 with 11 kills and an assisted block.
Wild’s kill from the outside was the first point of the night for the Bulldogs. She also gave the ‘Dogs a 3-0 lead with her first service ace. The Bulldogs would eventually increase their lead to 8-3 after Maci Murdock’s kill in the middle of the net.
The ‘Dogs lead in the opening set increased to 12-9 on a service ace from Alcantara, and then they jumped ahead 22-19 when Albertson and teammate Megan Callahan combined for key blocks. Callahan proved to be a stalwart for the ‘Dogs, ending the match with four total blocks.
Fresno State started the second set trailing by three, but it cut in to the Aztecs’ lead with a kill from Albertson. The Aztecs would even the match 1-1 after taking the second set 25-17.
The third set was dominated by San Diego State, as it opened with a 6-1 run. Despite a pair of errors, the Aztecs would keep the pressure on the Bulldogs and never let up, winning the third set 25-19.
The Bulldogs trailed the Aztecs 15-13 in the fourth set, but they were unable to tie it up or take the lead, and San Diego State would hold on for a 25-23 victory.
The loss was a tough one for the ‘Dogs, but they’ll have to regroup as their next two games are on the road at Colorado State and Wyoming.
