Former Fresno State standout golfer Nick Watney defeated Tiger Woods 1-up on the 18th hole, and sent the world’s most famous golfer packing after Thursday’s second round at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship. Woods missed a 5-foot birdie putt on the final hole that would have sent the match to extra holes.
“I was fortunate to make one more than he did,” Watney told the PGA after his second-round win. “You expect your opponent to make it, and when you’re opponent is Tiger Woods, you really expect him to make it.”
Watney took an early lead, winning the first hole at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, but Woods responded with a birdie on the second hole to even out the score. After Watney bogeyed the fourth hole, Woods took his only lead of match play to go 1-up on the former Bulldog.
But the lead didn’t last as Watney made par on the seventh hole and Woods bogeyed to make the match all-square. Woods conceded the 10th hole, giving Watney the hole and a 1-up lead.
A birdie on the 12th hole gave Watney a 2-up lead on Woods that would last until Watney bogeyed the on the 16th hole, bringing his lead back to 1-up.
The two both shot par on the 17th hole, giving Watney a chance to seal the WGC victory on the 18th green with a birdie shot from the rough, but the shot rolled just past the hole.
“I have so much respect for Tiger and his game,” Watney said. “I was fully expecting to go down number one. In that respect, I feel a bit fortunate, but I’m happy to move on.”
With the win, Watney advances to today’s third round of the WGC Accenture Match Play Championships, where he will he go head-to-head against Lee Westwood of England. Westwood defeated Robert Karlsson 3-and-2 in the second round.
