A day after a thrilling 10th-inning victory in the opening game of the NCAA Softball Stanford Regional, the Bulldogs were dropped by the host Cardinal 3-1 Saturday afternoon.
The loss means the Bulldogs face elimination in this evening’s contest against the winner of the Pacific-Nebraska game currently in progress. Even if Fresno State can save elimination this evening, the Bulldogs must win two more contests to advance out of the regional round for the first time since 1999.
In the loss to Stanford, Michelle Moses and Mackenzie Oakes split duty on the mound, combining for seven hits and three earned runs. The Bulldogs’ lone run came in the fifth inning off Nicole Angene’s solo home run. The homer cut the Cardinal lead to 2-1, but Stanford reeled off one more run in the sixth inning.
Michelle Moses and Diane Runge were the only two other Bulldogs to record hits as Fresno State continued to struggle at the plate. Yesterday’s victory over Nebraska saw Fresno State manage just two hits through 10 innings.
